Roger Adams Lab Fan Project

The project start date was March 23, 2010 and the completion date is expected to be March 8, 2011.

The project consist of rebuilding 2 of the 3 current supply air handlers in the basement of RAL to modern standards. One of the 3 units will now become a redundant supply unit with new duct work to allow supply air redundancy in the case of maintenance or failure of the other 2 units. Other possible supply air redundancy is from the new roof mounted units. In failure mode, changeover is manual, not automatic.

The other major piece of this project is installing 2 new roof mounted air handling units with energy recovery, 4 new roof mounted chemical hood exhaust fan clusters, each with a redundant fan to eliminate down time for maintenance, etc, and re ducting the 90+ chemical hood exhaust fans to these eight new fans, and 4 redundant/back-up fans for N+1 redundancy. Loss of a single chemical exhaust fan should not be noticed by any occupant, and will automatically switch over to a redundant exhaust fan. This phasing will be critical to our research. We will be in constant communications with faculty before each section of chemical hoods are shut down to transition to the new fans. Every effort will be made to make these transitions in as few of hours as possible.

Along with the new chemical hood exhaust we will be installing a heat recovery wheel for energy efficiency and better temperature control. The energy efficiency we will accomplish from this project will take RAL from #2 on the energy usage list on campus to #10 or lower on the energy use list.

We are still investigating possibilities to increase efficiency, and air temperature quality, during this project. This project does not include the constant air volume boxes in the rooms which have been a point of contention with temperature control at the room level. F&S Engineering is working on that to hopefully incorporate in the project or soon after as a maintenance issue.
