(06/2018) Alumni news - Dr. Yung-Tin Pan (PhD, 2017) finished his postdoc training at Los Alamos National Lab. He will start his own research career as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering of National Tsinghua University. We wish him all the best!

(06/2018) Our work on the formation of dish-like higher-ordered Pd nanostructures appeared in the June issue of Nano Research. It was featured as the cover of this Special Issue. This work examines how the ion-ligand complexation affects the formation kinetics of 2D nanomaterials.

(05/2018) We welcome Siva Arumugam to join us under a visiting program from Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST). Siva is supported by a Presidential Fellowship from DGIST.

(11/2017) Congratulations to Thao for winning the Lam Research Corporation Scholarship.

(11/2017) Congratulations to Jack and Thao, this year’s winners of the Graduate Research Symposium from our group! Jack was awarded the second place in poster presentation on the acid-stable pyrochlore oxygen evolution reaction catalysts, while Thao won the third place in oral presentation on her study of durability of Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction using in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS).

(10/2017) Graduate student, Cheng Zhang (Tsinghua Univ.) and visiting student Yu Zhou (Tianjing Univ.) jioned our group. Welcome!

(09/2017) Using the popular capping agents of oleic acid and oleyamine, we uncovered growth models that can be used to quantify the growth kinetic of nanocrystals. This work appeared in Nano Letters (open access) as an AuthorChoice article.

(09/2017) We welcome Prof. Chuan Shi and Prof. Huijuan Zhang to join us as visiting scholars, supported by CSC scholarship program.

(08/2017) Jaemin and Jack's work on acid-stable, pyrochlore Y2Ru2O7-x oxygen evolution catalysts for water splitting was published in Journal of the American Chemical Society (open access). Effect of yttrium on the activity and stability is analyzed. Congrats!

(08/2017) Our work on selective methanation of carbon dioxide by rhodium-on-palladium nanocatalysts appeared as a Very Important Paper (VIP) in ChemNanoMat. Good job, Frank!

(07/2017) We welcome Prof. Haidong Zhao and Dr. Wei Gao to visit us for a year, sponsored by the CSC. We also welcome the undergrauate interns, Kaitian Mao (USTC), Lei Pan (SJTU), Zhen Jia and Yu-Ang Shi (both from Tsinghua) to start their summer research this month.

(09/2016) Kai-Chieh's work on the continuous production of carbon-supported Pt3Ni octohedral and Pt cubic catalysts using a novel conveyor transport system was published in Small. The paper was featured as the Frontpiece Article. Congrats!

(08/2016) Congratulations to Thao Ngo for receiving an Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Award from U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)! Thao will work on using in situ X-ray and TEM techniques to study the structural dynamics of catalysts for fuel cell and other applications.

(05/2016) Yung-Tin (Frank) Pan just won a Dissertation Completion Fellowship. Congrats!

(05/2016) The group held a successful mini research symposium for our five undergraduate students (Mr. Taro Bourne, Miss Xuxia Chen, Miss Lingqing Yan, Miss Yini Zhao, and Miss Wenjun Zhu). We thanked them for their contributions to our research. Lingling will graduate this month and attend Graduate School at UT Austin and Xuxia will go to UC Berkeley in the fall.

(01/15) Jianbo Wu (PhD, 12, Postdoc., 12-14) finished his training with us. He set up his research program at Shanghai Jiaotong University as a National Young Thousand Talent Plan Professor.

(01/15) According to the latest Thomson-Reuters/ISI database, at least a dozen of our recent publications are among the Highly Cited Papers, which "received enough citations to place them in the top 1% of their academic field based on a highly cited threshold for the field and publication year”.

(12/14) Xi Yin received a 2014 SCS Science Image Challenge Award (Finalist) from the School of Chemical Science. The image was created based on a research paper on "infinite PdPt metal atom chains", appeared in Angewandte Chemie. Congrats!

(12/14) Our group raised $137.26 for the Eastern Illinois Foodbank during the two-week Penny War organized by the ChBE GSAC. We received an edible prize for the charitable donation. Way to go, everyone!

(11/14) Steven Warren received Hanratty Travel Award from ChBE and Fall 2014 Conference Travel Award from Graduate College for him to attend the AIChE meeting in Atlanta. Congrats!

(11/14) Congratulations to Xi Yin for his latest publication in Nano Letters. The work focused on the Hanoi-tower like palladium 2D nanosheets and the understanding of the shape control of metal nanostructures based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

(04/13) Dr. Jaemin Kim joined our research group. He will work on the synthesis and catalytic properties of colloidal metal and alloy nanoparticles .

Alex will work on two projects: optimization of MEA fabrication for PEMFCs and thin film construction for solar cells. Isthier Chaudhury, a sophomore, will continue his research with us throughout the summer.

(08/08) Two high school interns, Preston Scott (ACS Project SEED Student) and Joshua Sacks (Pittsford Sutherland HS, PCIP Intern) finished their research programs with us. Preston will attend Duke University this fall. We wish them all the best.

(09/07) Our full paper on the shape controls of complex platinum nanostructures will appear in a coming issue of Journal of Physical Chemistry C (Nanomaterials and Interfaces). This article will be featured in the issue cover.

(09/07) Shengchun Yang, Ben Rutz and Yaqing Liu joined the group during the past several months. They started working on projects related to the development of alloy/intermetallic fuel cell catalysts and nanostructured materials for biological applications.

(08/07) Two local high school students, Dalton Labarge from Wilson Magnet High School and Morissa Krotter from Pittsford-Sutherland High School, completed their summer intern programs with us. Dalton was an ACS Project SEED II student and worked on developing novel coatings for magnetic particles.

(06/07) Our communication on the synthesis of ordered intermetallic PtPb nanorods was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. PtPb can potentially be used as an efficient electrocatalyst in direct methanol fuel cells.

(12/06) Dr. Yong Wang has successfully defended his Ph. D. thesis titled “Synthesis and Property of Nanoparticles in Ionic Liquids and their Surface Modification”. He will join DuPont Company soon. Congratulation!

(06/06) We welcome Alex Elliott, Eric Janosko, and Whitney Shook to join our group as Eisenberg summer interns. They will work on the development of new processing methods for making nanomaterials for fuel cell applications.

(05/06) Congratulation to Xiaowei Teng, who has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis recently. He joined Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) earlier this month. We wish him continuous success at his new position.

(03/05) According to Essential Science Indicators (ISI), our paper on patterned Langmuir-Blodgett films of monodisperse nanoparticles (Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2003, 125, 630) is in the top 1% within its field in terms of number of citations received.

(03/05) Mr. Xiaowei Teng has won a Graduate Student Award (Silver Medal) at the 2005 Materials Research Society (MRS) Spring Meeting. This is one of the widely recognized student awards in the international materials research community.

(02/05) Dr. Hong Yang received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation to support his research in the area of multifunctional nanomaterials. He will use the grant to develop new magnetic nanocomposites and low-temperature fuel cell catalysts. This grant will also be used to fund his outreach effort.
