Fall 2017

First year graduate students that are interested in our research are welcome to attend the Kraft lab’s group meetings, which are held at 4 pm on Tuesdays in 117 RAL. The schedule is as follows:
9/12: No group meeting this week.
9/19: Sayani presents her progress in developing label-free screening platforms for tissue engineering applications.
9/26: Corryn presents her research on mass spectrometry imaging to study stroke.
10/3: Brittney presents her progress towards SIMS imaging of intracellular lipid distribution.
10/10: No group meeting this week.
10/17: Isamar presents her research on label-free screening tools for hematopoiesis.
10/24: Sayani updates her progress in developing label-free screening platforms for use in tissue engineering.

Fall 2016

The Kraft lab says goodbye to recent PhD graduate, Dr. Yelena Ilin, who is starting a Process Engineer III position at Sanofi Genezyme. Best of luck Yelena! You will be missed!

Yelena Ilin has successfully defended her final Ph.D. thesis, entiled, "Utilizing Raman spectroscopy and multivariate analysis to identify and monitor the differentiation states of individual stem cells". Congratulations Dr. Ilin!

First year Biophysics graduate student, Brittney Gorman, is now an official member of the Kraft lab. Welcome Brittney!

Summer 2016

Isamar Pastrana-Otero has received an Outstanding Research Award from the Summer Pre-Doctoral Institute (SPI) at the University of Illinois. Great job Isamar!

Diana Rodriguez has completed her summer research in our lab. She is returning to teach high school chemistry at the CROEM School in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. It was a pleasure to have you in our lab Diana!

The Kraft lab says goodbye to recent PhD graduate, Dr. Raehyun "Rayna" Kim, who is starting a new position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of North Carolina. She will be working in Prof. Nancy Allbritton's lab. Best of luck Rayna!

Diana Rodriguez presented a poster and gave a talk entitled, “Using gold nanoparticles for bioimaging cell membrane lipids in stroke-related ischemia” at the nano@illinois Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Symposium at UIUC on July 22, 2016. Nice job Diana!

The Kraft lab says goodbye to recent PhD graduate, Dr. Ashley Yeager. Ashley is continuing in the Medical Scholar Program at UIUC as a full-time student in medical school. Best of luck Ashley!

The Kraft lab welcomes RET participant, Diana Rodriguez, who is a high school chemistry teacher at the CROEM School in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She will be performing research with Corryn this summer. Welcome Diana!

Raehyun "Rayna" Kim has successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, entiled, "Investigating Sphingolipid Behavior and Function using Metabolic Labeling". Congratulations Dr. Kim!

Ashley Yeager has successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, entiled, "Exploring the Roles of Key Lipids in the Influenza Life Cycle". Congratulations Dr. Yeager!

The Kraft lab says goodbye to recent PhD graduate Dr. Vahid Mirshafiee, who is starting a new position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology at University of California at Los Angeles. He will be working with Dr. Andre Nel and Dr. Tian Xia. Best of luck Vahid!

Vahid Mirshafiee has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, entiled, "Exploring Nanoparticles' Interactions with Blood Proteins and Visualizing the Heterogeneity within Hematopoietic Cell Populations". Congratulations Dr. Mirshafiee!

Ashley Yeager has received a Spring 2016 Hanratty Travel Award to present a poster, "Is the site of influenza virus assembly and budding enriched with cholesterol and sphingolipids?" at the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) meeting at the Experimental Biology 2016 Conference in San Diego this April. Congratulations Ashley!

Vahid Mirshafiee has received a Spring 2016 Hanratty Travel Award to present a talk entitled, "Assessment of Exploiting Protein Corona for Active Targeting of Nanoparticles to Desired Cells" at the 2016 NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology (NEMB) Conference in Houston this February. Congratulations Vahid!

Congratulations to Vahid Mirshafiee for winning second place for his talk, entitled, "Targeted Delivery of Anticancer Drugs to Tumors," in this year's RESEARCH LIVE! competition, sponsored by the Graduate College. The final round of the competition was held on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at the at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Nice job Vahid!

Research_Live!_Winners

Our recent publication in Biomaterials, entitled "Impact of protein pre-coating on the protein corona composition and nanoparticle cellular uptake," was highlighed in a Nanowerk article. Congratulations to authors Vahid Mirshafiee, Raehyun Kim, Soyun Park (visiting REU student from UC-Berkeley) and Morteza Mahmoudi (collaborator at Stanford)!

The Kraft lab welcomes new chemical & biomolecular engineering graduate student, Sayani Majumdar. Sayani joins us after completing her Master of Engineering degree in chemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Science.

The School of Chemical Sciences has selected Vahid Mirshafiee to receive a Graduate Student Teaching Award, and Prof. Mary Kraft to receive a Faculty Teaching Award. These awards recognize teaching excelence during the 2014 - 2015 acadenic year. Congratulations!

Alumni update: Dr. Jessica Frisz (Ph.D. 2012) has started a new position at Abaxis. Congratulations Jessica!

Prof. Mary Kraft has received the 2015 Early Career Research Award from the Prairie Chapter of the American Vacuum Society (AVS). She presented an award talk at the AVS Prarie Chapter 2015 Symposium on September 10, 2015 at the University of Notre Dame.

Summer 2015
