Practice exams and exam solutions

Do the practice exams carefully before the actual exams. They are very similar in format to the actual exam. This semester, the hour exams will be in the evenings and you will get slightly over an hour, to avoid the rush in and out of the lecture hall, which wastes precious time.

Practice Exams and Exam Solutions

Hint pages for all Exams: Hint Pages (pdf)
These two hint pages will be used (with minor modifications) on all exams. Your TAs also may let you use them on quizzes. Print them out and use them while working practice exams. Also bring them with you to the actual hour exams. They are posted here in advance so you can become familiar with their content, and not waste time scrambling to look up things during the actual hour exam.

First Hour Exam:
-Held at 7 PM on Thursday October 6th, 2011.
-Exam locations: 100 Noyes Lab (AQ2,3,8,9,B,C: Thomas Smith & Jonathan Wang) and 228 Natural History Building (AQ1,4,5,6,7,D: Beth Lindquist and Jessie Peh).
-The exam will cover up to and including the 9/26/11 lecture on MOs. No transition metals.
-Closed book, calculators allowed; a hint page very similar to the one posted above will be handed out with the exam.
-If you need to take the conflict exam at 5:30 PM instead, sign up on the sheet in the Chem Annex Hallway (starting Monday October 3d, near CA 107).
-The Prof. and TAs will do a review session during Wednesday lecture before the exam.
-No lecture on Friday. Instead, exam booklets will be returned and Prof. Gruebele will go over it. If you can't make it Friday, no problem: your TAs will return graded booklets to you during the next quiz section meeting.

Below you will find some practice exams, taken from past exams. Solutions will be posted the weekend before the exam - try doing the questions 'cold turkey' first.

Note: The practice exams have a "Word problem" at the end. On our exam, ALL problems will be multiple choice. Do the Word problem anyway - its contents is still similar to things that will show up in multiple choice questions.

Note: Make sure you've done all homework assignments. At least one question from each assignment will figure (with the numbers changed, but not much more) on the exam. In general, the exam questions will be similar to the homework material, lectures, and the practice exams given below. The exams are not intended to surprise you, but to test whether you've learned what you know you should be studying. The actual exam has only multiple choice questions, but work the practice "word problems" also.

-The exam will cover from the 9/28 to the 11/11 lecture included.
-About half the questions will be slightly modified from the textbook homework assignments.
-Closed book, calculators allowed; a hint page very similar to the one posted above will be handed out with the exam.
