research interests

I was born and brought up in the 'city of joy', Kolkata, India and received my three year bachelor degree in Chemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata. I had my first research experience during the summer of my third year, when I worked on the synthesis and characterization of BODIPYs in the lab of Prof. M. Ravikanth in IIT Bombay. This is where I first started to gain interest in the field of instrumentation to characterize compounds. I then proceeded to do my masters degree in Chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. I did another summer project in Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, where I worked on determining the IR-Spectrum of Glutathione-Zn complex computationally and comparing it with the experimentally obtained spectrum to develop a binding model. I also worked in the Femtosecond Laser Lab under the guidance of Prof. D. Goswami for my masters' thesis, which was on the effect of pH change on two-photon absorption cross-section of dyes and its application in imaging. When I came here as a graduate student, I fell in love with the idea of learning a new technique called Solid State NMR and applying it in solving intriguing biological problems. I am now working on using and developing SSNMR techniques to study the mechanism of binding of small molecules to alpha-synuclein, the protein responsible for the pathogenicity of Parkinson's Disease.
