- The award recognizes an outstanding career of contributions to the history of chemistry.
- The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque.
- The award is international in scope, and is presented annually at the Fall National ACS meeting.
- This award was formerly known as the Dexter Award, the Sidney M. Edelstein Award, the HIST Award and in 2023 the Joseph B. Lambert HIST Award. NOTE: There will be no distinction between previous HIST Award winners and the Joseph B. Lambert HIST Award. It continues a tradition started in 1956 with the first Dexter Award. This award is sponsored by and administered by the Division of the History of Chemistry (HIST).
